In the 1920's Reed and Abee, Inc. started business in Asheville as a construction company, which was a subsidiary known as Oakley Construction Company. In 1958 B. V. Hedrick and Co. acquired this company and changed it's name to Asheville Concrete Materials, Inc.

Asheville Concrete Materials, Inc. expanded greatly in the next 27 years, when in 1983 the name was changed to Southern Concrete Materials, Inc. to represent the larger geographical area covered by the company. Cabarrus Concrete Co., a company founded and operating in Cabarrus County, joined with SCM in 2001 as an affiliated company.

Currently, the Southern Concrete family has over 30 locations in North Carolina and Georgia. Plants include Andrews, Asheville, Black Mountain/Swannanoa, Blairsville, Brevard, Bryson City, Burnsville, Canton, Charlotte (4 locations), Concord, Enka, Fletcher, Franklin, Hayesville, Hendersonville, Hendersonville Pre-Cast, Lake Norman, McCaysville, Mills River, Murphy, Naples, Pisgah Forest, Ranger, Salisbury, Sylva, Van Wyck, Waynesville and Weaverville.
